Philosophy of Care

Ho’omau Counseling Services believes in our humanity. We hold that humans are not broken. Rather, that bad things have happened to us, our ancestors, and the land we live on. As a result, we develop skills to survive a world we’ve learned is unsafe; around people who are unsafe. A cornerstone of our work revolves around exploring our humanity, making space for compassion, and honing our wisdom to encourage our clients’ to flourish.

We look for ways to bridge gaps in treatment beyond the White Western view by encouraging the discovery of historical roots and engaging in ancestral practices. While this practice does recognize the contribution that modern science has on well-being, we also recognize the value traditional medicine contributes to health.

This practices incorporates the science of neurobiology, poly-vagal theory, somatosensory regulation, and the connection to community as a means of restoration. This practice respects ancestral wisdom, knowing that not all knowledge is written. It respects that the land is our ancestor and we are Her stewards. We are built upon the tenets of wellness that are rooted in Indigenous Medicine, we explore balance within each factor, with the aim of promoting harmony with oneself, family, community, and systems. Returning to Wellness from Historical, intergenerational, and Individual traumas is hard work. Together, you get to determine how you intentionally greet the world.
